15 students injured as lightning strikes camp

MALACCA: Lightning struck a camping site during a freak storm and injured 15 Saint Francis Institution cadets in Bukit Katil.

The cadets, aged between 13 and 16, were taken to the Malacca Hospital, said an army personnel who declined to be named. The camp is run by the army and the Education Ministry.

He said the winds were so strong that all the tents were blown away.

It is believed that when the storm struck, the students were ordered into a tent. When the lightning struck, they were lying down on their steel beds.

“A total of 548 students from several schools in Malacca were camping at the site at the time of the incident,” he added.

After learning of the incident, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam visited the site before checking on the cadets at the hospital.

So far, only one student is still warded at the hospital.

One of the students Mohd Faisal Othman, 15, said they were having a marching practice when it started to drizzle.

“The lightning struck and we all started screaming from the jolt,” he said.

Malaysia has the second highest number of lightning strikes in the world and is known as Asia's lightning capital.
