KUALA LUMPUR: The controversial RM2.2bil Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) project was awarded on merit and not for political reasons, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"It is on the basis of proper evaluation. The project was awarded based on merit, based on submissions to the Government and the Economic Planning Unit.
"It is no different from other concessions awarded by the Government," he said at a press conference here Thursday.
The project, which links Kinrara and Pusat Bandar Damansara, stoked controversy when it was awarded to companies linked to a lawyer who acts for a political party and the wife of a former chief justice.
Muhyiddin said there was a thorough evaluation to ensure that only companies that were properly qualified and of merit were chosen.
"The Government has been very open. Evaluations are done on the basis of merit," he reiterated.
