IT will cost about RM300,000 a year to train Imran Daniel Abdul Hazli to achieve Malaysia's dream of excelling in tennis. Imran won two singles titles at the World Junior Masters tournament in Turkey on Nov 8. His father and coach Abdul Hazli Zainuddin said sponsorship from the Youth and Sports Ministry, National Sports Council and the private sector was needed to help support a five-year programme outlined for the young athlete. He said the sponsorship was not only about joining competitions but also to cover training aspects and his education needs. "In the next one or two years, I am planning to send Imran for more tournaments. Therefore, we are suggesting home-schooling Imran and he will need a personal tutor," Abdul Hazli said. Besides using his own money, Abdul Hazli said he had received support from a law firm and a tennis team to help ease his financial burden in sending Imran for the World Junior Masters.
>Pasar malam vendor loses RM250,000 cash in house fire
A 57-year-old woman's dream of owning a house was destroyed when a tin can containing RM250,000 in cash burned to ashes after her house in Mentakab, Pahang, caught fire recently. Asmah Arim had been saving the money for 32 years. The victim, who is a pasar malam vendor, also suffered another estimated loss of RM150,000 for her goods and jewellery. When asked why she did not keep the money in the bank, Asmah said that she wasn't smart and it was troublesome to deal at the counter. Her 17-year-old son sustained burn injuries while trying to stop the fire. "I managed to remove two gas cylinders from the house while brother saved the motorbike, and we pushed mother's van away together," said the victim's daughter who lives next door. The Fire and Rescue Department managed to stop the fire before it spread to two houses nearby.
