A 'Halal Speed Dating' event held in Petaling Jaya in May reportedly received high response from single men and ladies.

The event, specifically for Muslims in compliance with Islamic principles, was organised by 34-year-old Zuhri Yuhyi.

"The purpose (of the speed dating) was to raise awareness about the process of getting acquainted in a respectful manner based on Islamic law and to share marriage advice," Zuhri said.

When registration was opened in April, some 1,200 people, including those from Singapore, Hong Kong and several European countries, expressed their interest.

However, the organisers shortlisted to only 80 participants to attend the match-making event.

The only requirement was that females must bring along a guardian and after a successful match, the organiser would forward the male's contact number to the guardian.

Zuhri said 14 couples hit it off with some planning to take the marriage step.
