A seven-year-old boy was allegedly beaten to death by his mother's lover, who is a golf caddy. The Year One student from Taman Kosas, Ampang was found with severe internal injuries in his abdominal area, believed to be caused by a blunt object. According to Ampang Jaya police, the boy had stopped breathing and had no pulse when his mother brought him to Ampang Hospital. Doctor tried to resuscitate him before pronouncing him dead an hour later. Further investigations showed signs of redness on his hands, face and private part, as well as old wounds on his waist. Both suspects, the man and mother, are under remand for a week under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries a death sentence by hanging if found guilty.
>Youth suicide a growing problem
Latest data from the Health Ministry information centre showed that 221 teenagers, aged between 15 and 19 caused self-injury and attempted suicide in 2013. Two of them died. For youth between the ages of 20 and 24, a total of 204 cases and four deaths were recorded in the same year. The 25-29 age group saw the highest death toll, at 11. It was found that self-injurious behaviour was more prevalent among women, with 638 cases recorded in government hospitals, compared with their male counterpart with 459 cases in 2013. National Psychiatric Association secretary Dr Muhammad Muhsin Ahmad Zahari said the number of youth suicide attempts has increased significantly since 2000. "It (the number) is very significant because in 2000, psychiatrists only received one or two cases per week, but now almost every day," he said.
