> 15-year-old girl gets married at mass wedding ceremony
A 15-year-old girl married her 21-year-old beau during a mass wedding held at the Malacca International Trade Centre on Sunday. Nurulain Mohammad, a Form Three student, is now wife to Zulhelmi Kaharuddin, whom she met several years ago and who runs an eatery. The young couple were among 18 that tied the knot at the Majlis Perkahwinan Perdana 2014 event held by the Umno Bukit Katil division. According to Nurulain, their parents urged them to seal their vows after learning they were both serious about the relationship. "Friends advised me to wait until I completed Form Five, but I was determined to get married," she said. In Malacca, girls under 16 and boys under 18 can marry with their parents' consent.
> Lab test finds no porcine DNA in tilapia
Lab test have confirmed that fish samples taken from a pond in Redang Panjang, Selama, Perak, did not contain porcine DNA. Perak state executive councillor Datuk Saarani Mohamad said the test was conducted by the Chemistry Department in Petaling Jaya. However, the Perak Fisheries Department will continue to monitor the pond while the local land and district offices have taken action against the owner for not having a valid permit to operate the pond. It was reported on Dec 3 that state Fisheries Department and other relevant agencies, including the state religious affairs department, had taken samples of catfish and tilapia to address allegations that the owner had fed the fish with pork.
