Monitor ‘sekolah pondok’ to curb extremism, Government urged

The Government has been urged to come out with a law to monitor sekolah pondok (religious schools) as a step to address the spread of extremism and militant recruitment, Berita Harian reported. 

1Malaysia Pondok Development Foundation chief executive Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said these schools could be more susceptible to extremist messages especially those guided by non-ulamas and those having lack of religious knowledge.

> Illegal gambling operators bribing enforcement officers
Corruption among enforcement officers has been sabotaging efforts to eradicate illegal gambling machines, Utusan Malaysia reported.

It quoted a source as saying that illegal operators did not have to worry as "everything has been taken care of on the legal side", with some willing to spend up to RM300,000 per month to bribe the officers. 

"Some syndicates use certain codes to signal that they have ‘paid’. For example a premise in Selangor used either the red or blue light signal to show that they had bribed the officers," the source said.

> Pahang coffee shop operates on ‘self-service mode’
A coffee shop in Sungai Penjuring, Bentong, is operating on a ‘self-service mode’, according to Sin Chew Daily.

Its operator leaves the coffee shop unattended as customers can be seen taking cigarettes, alcohol and carbonated drinks from the shelves and refrigerators.

Customers only need to place their cash into a plastic container at the counter before leaving.
