Championing green issues

Anugerah Hijau is back.

CALLING all youths – put on your thinking caps for a meaningful endeavour. The Anugerah Hijau is back to challenge your minds to come up with creative proposals and projects to address environmental issues like pollution, waste and forest destruction, among others.

The competing categories this year are Green Space, Green Film and Green Fashion. With Green Space, participants are required to design an eco-friendly campus for an Academy of Sustainability, while Green Film would appeal to budding filmmakers, who have to document a short film on the theme of ‘“energy”. Green Fashion entails designing sustainable fashion using bamboo fibre material.

“Over the years, the categories have changed and evolved,” says Yasmin Rasyid, founder and president of non-governmental group EcoKnights, which is organising the competition.

“The thematic aspects of each category changes every year, to offer variety and diversify the kind of issues we face today that challenges sustainability.”

The competition is now in its sixth year, and Yasmin is excited and enthusiastic about the prospects, particularly as she notes the increase in the number of participations each year.

For past winners, she says potential career opportunities often present themselves, and the icing on the cake of course, is having their proposals translated into real implementations.

“With the Green Film category, these Malaysian-produced short films are shared on a global platform which anyone, anywhere, can view. On the other hand, the top three winners of Green Space are offered paid internships with a local architectural or ID firm, one way of providing real-life experiences to participants.

“Implementation of Green Space projects will only take place three years down the line, but their outputs are important in helping EcoKnights design our new learning centre.”

Yasmin proudly adds that there have been outstanding submissions in the past, especially with films, declaring that Malaysian youths are highly creative in story-telling.

“If you are secretly passionate about film, fashion and design, I encourage you to participate, as most of you have hidden talents. For those who are already focusing on film, fashion and design, bring it a notch higher and apply your existing knowledge and experience to design something revolutionary,” she concludes.
