PROF Datuk Dr Wahid Omar has been appointed Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) vice-chancellor for a three-year term effective Sept 1.
Prof Wahid takes over from his predecessor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang who has been appointed secretary-general II at the Education Ministry.
The ministry, in a statement, said Prof Wahid’s appointment was based on its criteria, taking into account his academic experience, research and administration at UTM.
His background in engineering suits UTM’s research university status which has engineering as its niche, said the statement.
Before his appointment, Prof Wahid was deputy vice-chancellor (Development) at UTM.
He obtained his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the University of Strathclyde followed by a Master’s in bridge engineering from the University of Surrey and a PhD in structural engineering from the University of Birmingham, all located in the United Kingdom.
Prof Wahid has served in various posts at UTM including as head of graduate studies, head of the department of structures and materials as well as deputy dean (Research and Graduate Studies) at the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
He has also worked on research projects with the Works Department and the Construction Industry Development Board.
The ministry thanked Prof Zaini for his services as UTM vice-chancellor from 2008.
