FOR generations, the villagers of Kampung Gedong have gone surfing on the waves of the tidal bore that sweeps up the Batang Sadong river.

Locally known as “benak”, the tidal bore occurs when the incoming tide enters a shallow and narrow river mouth, forming a wave that travels up the river against the current.
