SEVENTY years ago, Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of France in a massive operation that would eventually lead to the end of the Second World War.
D-Day, the biggest sea and airborne invasion in history, took place on June 6, 1944, when some 156,000 troops were landed by the Allies on five beaches.
