KUCHING: A little over a month ago, a fierce argument erupted at the village home of a grieving family. It was past midnight and the funeral was only hours away.
The fight was over gambling and several dozen people were involved. It took hours of mediation by village elders before a solution was agreed upon in the wee hours of Aug 14. The funeral went ahead but so did the gambling, which dragged on night after night, for another week. Living across the grieving family was the village chief.
