BATANG AI: On May 13, an entire village was burnt down in rural Sarawak. Rumah Ngumbang went up in smoke rendering all 24 families of about 150 people homeless suddenly.
Rumah Ngumbang is a longhouse in the Batang Ai area, which is about 80km from the nearest town of Sri Aman (itself 190km from Kuching). Getting there is not as easy as taking a drive. One must first go to Batang Ai Dam’s jetty, then take a boat ride.
