AS THE rubbish woes in Kajang worsen, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has decided to clean up the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) centre in Semenyih with help from the state government.
MPKj president Datuk Hassan Nawawi Abd Rahman said this during the council’s fullboard meeting.
“The state government has stepped in to help solve the issue and subsidiary company Syarikat Hebat Abadi Sdn Bhd will be transferring the excess rubbish to the landfill in Tanjung Dua Belas, Kuala Langat,” he said.
The process is expected to be completed in October.
“After the RDF centre has been cleared, we will make an inspection to see if the centre can still operate.
“If not, we will have to find an alternative,” said Hassan.
He said that there were about 500 tonnes of rubbish collected in the Kajang municipality every day and the RDF centre could only process 300 tonnes a day.
“This has led to an accumulation of rubbish at the centre,” he explained.
The RDF centre had to cease operations in April as the Environment Department said it posed a pollution risk.
MPKj councillor Bryan Lai applauded the move as the step could help ease the worsening rubbish disposal problem in areas under MPKj.
“Hopefully, the plan will improve the situation in Kajang and the issue will be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.
Meanwhile, MPKj has also split the task of collecting rubbish with the subsidiary company.
The company will be collecting rubbish in commercial areas and from high-rise apartments daily, while MPKj contractors will be collecting rubbish from residential areas three times a week.
Hassan said seven zones had been identified as critical — Hulu Langat, Langat Cheras, Balakong, Cheras, Prima Saujana, Bukit Mewah and Sungai Chua.
“Hebat Abadi and MPKj contractors will focus on these areas,” he said.
In May, Hassan had said that MPKj contractors would only be collecting rubbish once a week due to the lack of sanitary landfill sites in the municipality.
