Many proven benefits of going green

1) Surabaya, Indonesia:

In the Waste Management Model: Surabaya Study Case by Ifron Hady Susanto, the city started its green and clean campaign (freedom from waste) in 2005. It successfully motivated many communities to clean and reduce waste by practising waste segregation and composting. In 2008, almost 20% of communities participated in the campaign. The campaign also created eco- tourism opportunities in several sub-districts in Surabaya. The basic concepts included reducing waste at source, sorting of wet and dry wastes as well as waste treatment by recycling dry waste and processing wet waste into compost.

2) Nova Scotia, Canada:

In 1995, Nova Scotia developed a Solid Waste Resource Management Strategy that committed the province to achieving a national waste diversion target of 50% by the year 2000. Nova Scotia was the only province to reach this goal and remains a national leader in waste diversion. It also became the only jurisdiction in North America to ban compostable organic material from disposal. To- date, 90% of residents have access to kerbside organic pickup (where organic materials collected at the kerb are turned into compost) and backyard composting is also common.
