While the one-sided scoreline favoured Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, it was with both their efforts that helped raise the RM 816,000 for the families of the technical and cabin crew of flight MH17 and Palestinian Relief Fund. 2014 CIMB Malaysian Open Squash Championship in Nu Sentral Mall. Brickfields, 23 August 2014.
TWO corporate figures took time out from their schedule for a game of squash to raise funds for the family members and loved ones of those on board MH17 and the Palestinian Relief Fund.
The charity match between Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) group managing director Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and CIMB Investment Bank chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz took place during the 2014 CIMB Malaysian Open Squash Championships last weekend.
A total of RM812,000 was raised, thanks to donors comprising MRCB’s and CIMB’s business partners, suppliers and contractors.
Mohamad Salim handed RM512,000 of the total amount donated to Malaysia Airlines executive vice-president, head of inflight services Hayati Datuk Ali.
Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul presented RM300,000 for the Palestinian Relief Fund to Mercy Malaysia general manager (communications and fundraising) Megawati Rashidi.
“While we continue with efforts to further raise the image of squash among Malaysian youth and sports enthusiasts, we are also doing our CSR bit to help the families of the technical and cabin crew of flight MH17 and also for the Palestinians in Gaza,” said Mohamad Salim.
Having been a MAS steward during his younger days, Mohamad Salim said while the funds were no compensation for the loss of lives, it was the best they could do.
Tengku Zafrul said, “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our clients, business partners and vendors for pledging generously to this charity match.
“It’s heartening to see that within a week, we were able to raise a substantial amount of contributions for both causes and we really appreciate the support given to us.”
A minute of silence was observed in honour of those who died on flight MH17 and the victims of Gaza before the start of the match, which saw Mohamad Salim win 11-6, 11-5, 11-9.
