Illegal indulgence: Turtle eggs are being sold openly and rampantly at Serikin market, in Bau District, near the Malaysia-Indonesia border. Although the sale of turtle eggs are banned in Sarawak under the Sarawak Wildlife Ordinance, The Star observed that a foreign trader hollered at customers to buy turtles eggs sold at RM10 for 11 eggs at the market, about 80km from Kuching yesterday. Some customers were also oblivious to the state law as the eggs were snapped up fast like hot cakes. The trader claimed that he brought in more than 1,000 eggs every weekend without much problems with the authorities. Turtles and its eggs are totally protected animal in the state and globally as they face many threats and the survival rate to adulthood is one in 1,000 hatchlings. Photo by ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE
