Welcomed by blue skies: Manzhouli borders Russia to the north and Mongolia to the west. This national gate stands at the border of China and Russia.

WE were due for a meeting with Manzhouli deputy mayor Li Zhuang, and yet we could not resist whipping out our handphones to take photos of the fluffy clouds against the blue sky.

Having just departed from smog-covered Beijing by flight two-and-a- half hours ago, it was a welcome change to see beautiful skies and green pastures in the city in Inner Mongolia.
