MORE than 60 avid remote-
controlled aircraft hobbyists had a wonderful time during their annual fun fly activity in Batu Kawan, south Seberang Prai.
The event, organised by the Penang Eagle RC Flying Club, kicked off at about 8.15am with a briefing session for out-of-state enthusiasts.
The participants from Penang, Kedah, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, Thailand and Japan then gathered at an open space area near the Batu Kawan Stadium which was used as the take-off and landing strip for their planes.
Club president Robert Teoh said the event was divided into two categories comprising beginner manoeuvres and expert manoeuvres.
The recent event drew a large crowd of spectators who braved the hot sun to watch the model planes and helicopters in action.
The highlights of the event were acrobatic shows and competitions including spot landing, drag race and upside-down quarter copter flying.
There were also several para-motor flying demonstrations and even turbine jet engine planes
that thrilled the crowd as they roared overhead at tremendous speed.
Club vice-president Dallan Low said the club was formed in 2011 and currently had 28 members.
He said among the remote-
controlled aircraft that took part in the event were single wing propeller planes and biplanes, helicopter, turbine-powered jets and gliders.
“Judging by the response of the audience, the event can be considered a success,” he said.
However, remote-controlled aircraft are expensive and the hobby can be time-consuming too.
But for enthusiasts, price is not an issue when it comes to fulfilling their dreams of flying an aircraft, even though it’s only a model.
Low said: “The price of a remote-
controlled propeller-powered plane costs between RM1,000 and RM5,000.
“Actually, when you see your aircraft soar in the sky, this makes the effort and money spent worthwhile.”
Among the participants, Ahmad Samsuddin, 32, said he truly enjoyed the acrobatic manoeuvres of the models.
