The old boys having a blast as they reminisce about the good old times.
A RECENT school reunion brought together former students from the St Xaviers’ Institution in Penang, some of whom haven’t seen each other for more than 20 years.
Around 50 old boys who graduated in 1986 attended the gathering at the Frangipani Restaurant and Bar in Changkat Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
This is the third gathering for this batch of former SXI students, the first two were held in Penang.
Nilesh Timbadia, the organiser this time around, said Kuala Lumpur was chosen as the venue due to its centrality.
“We have old boys who are from Penang, KL, Johor, Japan, Singapore, the US and Australia and currently working in different industries.
“In school we fought but now we are close,” he said.
He credited social media for playing a part in getting the long-lost classmates connected.
“We planned a year ahead and connected with former classmates using Facebook.
“It is really great to get people from all over Malaysia and the world,” he said.
It was a lively gathering as the former schoolmates exchanged stories and reminisced.
There were some who travelled from Penang for the gathering such as Adrian Rajamoney, who has attended all three gatherings.
“To me it is about Xavierian spirit, it is a brotherhood,” he said.
Rod Manikam, an actor and producer based in Western Australia, had previously lost contact with
his schoolmates for more than 20 years.
“It was worth coming back from Australia for this gathering, many can’t recognise me as I was scrawny back then,” he said.
The most senior Xavierian at the gathering was Lim Yit Man, 84, who came with his son Leslie Lim, who is also from the batch of students who graduated in 1986.
“Both of my son’s are Xavierians, it is a family tradition.
“SXI provides good education and the Brothers are very hardworking and straightforward,” he said.
Also present was their former science and math teacher Lim Zong Hong, who was given the nickname “Zorro” because of his name.
“I’m often invited to student gatherings and I can still recognise some of my former students, it is nice to catch up with them,” he said.
