THE Vermont Retirement and Senior Care Home in Penang was set up in 2012 to address the need of caring for elderly
folk who are unable to travel on overseas holidays with their children.
In an interview, the home coordinator who wanted to be known only as Teh said a lot of preparation and care were needed for senior
citizens to travel with their children.
“Most of the time, they prefer not to travel but they do not have anywhere else to go. This is where Vermont comes in.
“We provide care for short-stay periods such as on a weekly, weekday or weekend basis which is very convenient for the elderly and their children,” she said.
Teh said the home located at a three-storey bungalow on Bukit Jambul was different from the typical nursing home.
“Our unique location provides a wonderful scenery of the Penang Bridge and a relaxing atmosphere with a soft breeze from the hill.
“Those who come here will feel like they are coming over to a friend’s home,” she said.
The home also provides nursing care for senior citizens who have just undergone surgery and also those who are staying for a longer period of time.
Teh said with round-the-clock care by qualified nurses and a security guard at the porch at night, the home is an ideal healing centre for the elderly to recuperate.
The building also has a lift to take the residents to the higher floors and also mobile ramps for wheelchairs.
“Our nurses will monitor the residents’ vital signs and also write a report on their activities.
“This provides important data to monitor their health condition,” she added.
Teh said the facility placed importance on the children and relatives’ role in aiding the elderly’s healing and care process.
“The children or relatives must come on a regular basis to visit the old folk before they are allowed to stay here on a long-term basis.
“This is because the children’s visits and attention go a long way in lifting up the aged’s spirits and ensuring their stay here is a happy one,” she said.
