Rico begins the collection with darker shades and ends in a mixture of tones representing the warmth of summer.
RICO Rinaldi recently presented his SummerRaya 2014 collection of modest silhouettes with a contemporary upgrade on traditional looks.
Gathering inspiration from the baju kurung Kedah and baju Melayu, Rico reimagined the conventional apparel to suit discriminating urban fashionistas.
He debuted the collection at Black Box, Publika Solaris Dutamas, beginning with darker hues of blacks and greys, progressing to a more vibrant colour palette and ending with pale shades of pastel.
The up-and-coming young designer, who started designing in 2006, has had a summer infused Raya collection since 2010.
He decided to opt for simplicity this year.
Drawing inspiration from baju kurung Kedah, Rico designed a shorter, mid-waist “baju” or blouse instead of the longer knee-length version which is common for baju kurung.
“I wanted to bring a modern addition based on the baju kurung and baju Melayu with different trimming, cutting and layering techniques.
“My previous collection was bright and bold but this year I wanted the line to be energetic and yet not too overwhelming.
“Keeping it minimal, I included sequins as well as abstract and floral beading onto the simple prints of the material to brighten and enhance the outfits,” he said.
Full-length fitted and squared sleeves lent structure to the
delicate crepe silk and lace overlay materials used for the baju,
combining clean lines and femininity.
The sarong or skirt portion of the two-piece had a recurring theme with the use of ankle length sarong in the form of either a seamless straight-cut skirt or a ruffled front and pleated back skirt for an elegant but modest look.
There was also a range of apparel for men, in the form of modernised versions inspired by the three-piece baju Melayu.
In place of the traditional stiff collar or cekak musang collar, Rico used a contemporary Western spread collar, with asymmetrical dual-toned print for the baju that complemented the trousers.
He also used songket material for the third section of the outfit known as kain samping or kain sarong, traditionally worn beneath the baju and over the trousers, with strong colours like daring copper and ruby red to electric blue for a contemporary feel.
The apparel is available at MODVIER Bangsar, via online shopping at www.shop.ricorinaldi.com and www.fashionvalet.com.
