GALERI Seri Endon recently showcased the latest collections from eight of its talented batik designers and announced a collaboration with Alayra Design Sdn Bhd.
During the high-tea and batik parade showcase at the gallery, Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia chairman Nori Abdullah said Galeri Seri Endon, which is wholly owned by the foundation, was more than a batik retail outlet and the gallery prided itself on educating locals and foreigners alike on Malaysian batik.
“The gallery is ready to move on to the next level. Therefore, we have chosen to collaborate with winner of Piala Seri Endon 2013, Alayra Design Sdn Bhd owned by Nik Intan Rashid, which will manage the gallery from now onwards.
“Hence, with this new collaboration, we hope that Galeri Seri Endon will reach new heights in terms of market expansion, overseas reach and brand recognition,” Nori said.
Nik Intan, who is also one of the designers featured in the showcase, nurtured her interest in batik during her free time and had also attended classes to learn more about the art as well as the business of batik prior to her Piala Seri Endon Batik Design Competition 2013 win.
“I’ve always loved batik. I think it is in my blood as my father is from Terengganu and the state is famous for batik.
“Apart from that, my mum wears a lot of batik and I love each and every piece she has,” Nik Intan said.
“I left advertising to be in the batik industry and I’ve been working with batik for four years now.
“I think it is a huge opportunity to collaborate with Galeri Seri Endon as I look at it as a way of moving forward in this industry,” she added.
She also said she always gets inspired by her surroundings.
“For one of my designs today, I was inspired by a duit raya packet with jawi calligraphy,” she explained.
Her batik designs had been in the international market for almost two years through Alayra Design and she said she had received positive feedback from foreigners.
“They are very fascinated and excited to wear batik after I explain how it is done,” she said, adding that the material used for her Las Vegas hand-painted designs was cotton.
The other batik designers involved in the showcase were Jaludin Zainin, Jamilah Shukri, Karl Ng, Masrina Abdullah, Rizal Jasman, Suhairi Marlina and Zoe Tan.
