Malaysia’s own master photographers

THE Malaysian chapter of the Master Photographers Association (MPA) was recently launched with hopes to raise the standard of professional photography in the country.

The launch, held at Friendscino restaurant and bar in Damansara Heights, was attended by MPA chief executive officer Clare Louise Dipp and the trade body’s Chair of Qualifications Paul Cooper.

At the event, Dipp announced that Malaysian professional photographer Patrick Low had been picked MPA ambassador for Malaysia while Singaporean Ryan Wong was the new MPA ambassador for the Far East.

Dipp said as MPA was the only UK trade organisation for professional photographers, they had a very stringent system for judging and recognising the work of professionals who applied to the body.

She added that there were three different levels of MPA membership — Licentiate, Associate and the highest, Fellow.

“Beginning with Licentiate, they need to submit work which demonstrates that the photographer can produce marketable photographs.

“The work also needs to demonstrate their control over composition, lighting, posing as well as good business practices,” said Dipp.

And the requirements become harder as one applies for Associate or Fellow membership with the association, with panels of three to five professionals sitting in on the applicant’s work.

Low said the Malaysian chapter now numbered over 70 professional photographers.

“We have five Fellows, followed by 11 Associates, with the rest as Licentiates,” said Low.

Most of the new members were admitted following several rounds of judging by MPA officials before the chapter’s launch.

For Low, the honour of being an MPA ambassador was further sweetened by being awarded Associate status in two professional categories with the MPA, as a wedding photographer and in 3D photography.

“Being MPA’s Malaysian ambassador means that I represent the organisation in helping to raise industry standards here,” he said.
