Every year, on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).
The event, established in 2004, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary life-saving gifts of blood.
The Malaysia Blood Donor Society, with the cooperation of the National Blood Bank and the Health Ministry, is organising the first Blood Donor Fun Run and Health Carnival at 7pm on June 14 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The event is in conjunction with the World Blood Donor Day celebration.
Blood donors and non-blood donors are invited to the carnival to enjoy some light exercise and have fun while supporting the cause of saving lives.
The Blood Donor Fun Run 2014, which is open to blood donors and non-blood donors, will have six categories catering for all age groups.
It starts and ends at Car Park B, Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
The 5.5km run will take participants through the Bukit Jalil residential area.
Participants who complete the run will each receive a finisher medal and certificate.
Winners will also receive cash and stand a chance to win lucky draw prizes, too.
A pre-launch campaign to register interested runners since January has received more than 500 participants for the run.
The health carnival will showcase many health awareness programmes, exhibitions, health screening by NGOs, government agencies and corporate bodies.
The National Blood Bank is also planning to present appreciation awards to top blood donors. The event is expected to be launched by the Health Minister on the same day.
