THE Selangor state government should consider revising its low-cost housing specifications to create a more conducive environment for families, especially children, Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh said.
“Most families have to deal with cramped spaces, which is not conducive for children who want to study,” said Yeoh, adding that the government should look into providing a common library or study area in future designs for low-cost flats.
She was speaking at the launch of a community library for children in Subang Perdana Goodyear Court 2, which comprises 12 blocks housing 760 units, in USJ 6. The library was the result of a collaboration between Yeoh’s office and the joint management body (JMB).
Located within the premises, it is equipped with facilities including two computers with Internet connection, a printer, books and a space for group discussion and activities.
JMB chairman Ravandram Suppih said it would provide a quiet environment for the children to do their homework.
“They can also use the Internet for research and the printer for their school projects,” he said, adding that it would be open from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm, and on weekends upon request.
The library will complement the tuition classes currently run by the Asian Youth Ambassadors (AYA), to provide better educational facilities for the children living there.
AYA spokesman Joel Rajkumar said the programme had been carried out in Goodyear Court 2 since 2011, and it sees young volunteers providing the children with Mathematics and English tuition classes every weekend.
They currently have 44 students from Primary One to Form Five.
Yeoh’s office had contributed RM15,500 for the library and the AYA tuition programme.
Those who wish to donate computers, printers, stationery or other items to the library can call the JMB at 03-5621 9318.
