Retailer and manufacturer in fundraising drive for training centres

CONSUMER goods company Procter and Gamble (P&G) joined hands with Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin) to raise funds for CADS Enhancement and Vocational Centre (CADS).

CADS, located in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur is a non-profit organisation that caters to the educational as well as cognitive development of special children.

CADS stands for cerebral palsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia, Down Syndrome and slow learners.

The Extending Hope (Hulurkan Harapan) Campaign, is part of P&G’s Open Minds corporate social responsibility programme.

Consumers can help reach out to CADS by purchasing any P&G product at Mydin stores nationwide where Mydin will donate 5sen for every RM10 spent on products such as Pantene, Head and Shoulders, Rejoice, Olay, Oral B and many others.

The two-month nationwide campaign is ongoing until June 5.

CADS has two centres; CADS Enhancement Centre which caters for children with the mental age of 12 and below, and CADS Vocational Centre for children with the mental age of 12 to 18.

A total of 45 children from both centres will benefit from the fundraising campaign.

P&G Malaysia and Singapore country chief executive officer Nicolas de La Giroday said the Open Minds programme has always partnered with organisations that were aligned with their objective to help children with special education needs.

“CADS fits us as it provides these special children with the support they need to acquire living skills and become contributing members of society,” he said.

La Giroday added that education and vocational skills were the best gifts to give to special needs children.

“Our campaign this time is to raise public awareness, that with care and training, special children can be taught the important life skills that will be useful for them as they grow up,” he said.

Mydin Human Resource director Datin Dr Siti Hawa Mohd echoed La Giroday’s sentiment.

“Every child has something to contribute to the society if they are given the chance,” she said.

Also present at the launch was celebrity chef Ammar Al Ali, who demonstrated the art of making a Middle Eastern dessert, baklava, with two children from CADS, Bahar Ataei Abdul Rahim Ataei, 14 and Megat Iskandar Muzaffar Shah Megat Mohd Ifvian, 14.

“Parents of these special children should expose them to challenging tasks. Baklava is a very intricate dessert to make but they were able to successfully pull it off,” said Ammar.

Ammar, the children and teachers of CADS will also be present at the Extending Hope roadshow at Mydin Subang Jaya on April 26 where he will demonstrate simple dishes with the children’s assistance.

P&G, through its Open Minds programme, has to-date touched the lives of more than 10,000 children with learning disabilities.
