KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has finished installing 75% of 1,200 closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in the city to ensure public safety.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said work was ongoing as it involved digging through roads.
“We are confident all the CCTV units will be installed soon,” he said during a press conference after a ceremony to hand over CCTV units to Bank Negara.
The cameras will be synchronised and monitored by all police departments in the city. They will also be connected to the Integrated Transport Information System (ITIS) in Bukit Jalil.
Ahmad Phesal noted the rise in snatch thefts in the city, with one or two incidents occurring every month in Jalan Dato’ Onn, where Bank Negara is located.
“An action plan was formulated with Bank Negara to improve the level of security around its headquarters.
“In the first phase, we installed six CCTV units along Jalan Dato’ Onn, which will be monitored by the bank’s security department,” he said in his speech.
Two speed bumps were also constructed along the road.
“Railings were installed along the pedestrian walkway. The railings start from in front of Sasana Kijang to the Bank Negara building,” he added.
Ahmad Phesal said the second phase of the plan was currently being implemented and would be completed in two months.
This includes painting the pedestrian bridge in Jalan Kuching and the installation of three CCTV units at the covered pedestrian walkway near the Bandaraya LRT station.
Also present at the event were Bank Negara deputy governor Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim and DBKL deputy director-general (project implementation and maintenance) Datuk Najib Mohd.
