THE Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) strengthened its cultural, economic and social ties with Japan’s Hioki City through a Mini Malaysia-Japan Festival.
The festival showcased the diverse customs of both countries with joget performances as well as the Japanese fan and parasol dance.
The Malaysian Kendo Association (MKA) demonstrated the Japanese martial art at the event, which was held at MPSJ’s 3C complex recently.
Visitors also tried their hand at traditional Malaysian games such as congkak and a light-hearted version of Japan’s national sport, sumo.
There were booths offering traditional food from both countries such as keropok lekor, takoyaki and shaved ice desserts.
The miniature bazaar was organised by MPSJ, Hioki City and Alumni Look East Policy Society (ALEPS) to promote better understanding between the two cultures while sharing advancements in knowledge, said MPSJ president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi.
The Friendship City programme linking MPSJ to Hioki district in the Kagoshima prefecture was also aimed at developing both townships in terms of education, tourism, innovation and skills as well as community development.
“We will be uploading a documentary on how Hioki City keeps its neighbourhood and city clean.
“We hope Subang Jaya residents will learn from their experience,” said Asmawi.
Others present were Japanese ambassador to Malaysia Makio Miyakawa, ALEPS president Syed Putera Syed Mokhtar and MKA president Datuk Abdullah Malim Baginda.
Miyakawa expressed admiration for Malaysia’s rich culture and diversity.
The collaboration has led to other programmes such as green tourism, educational sessions on environmental management, homestay programmes and Japanese language classes.
