THE Beatles are no longer around but Beatlemania is still alive in Malaysia through die-hard fans like Foo Koon Sang.
The 55-year-old has spent most of his life amassing a large collection of Beatles memorabilia, which is kept in his modest apartment in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.
“I became a huge fan of the Beatles thanks to my older brother.
“I was only 12 back then and did not understand what they were singing.”
“But I could somehow identify with their songs,” said Foo.
The vinyl record that his brother gave him proved to be the first piece of a collection spanning 43 years and counting.
It comprises CD albums, vinyl records, DVDs, T-shirts, books, magazines, posters, drawings and other memorabilia relating to “The Fab Four”.
One of the rare pieces is a vinyl record of the experimental Wedding Album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which was originally released in a box set that contained a replica of their marriage certificate.
However, the Beatles CDs are his pride.
“I have almost every studio album CD by the Beatles and their individual members, except for three rare ones by Ringo Starr,” said Foo.
His wife and three children may not share his
passion for the band, but they have learned to live with their musical legacy as Foo regularly listens to his Beatles CDs.
He shares his passion with like-minded Beatles fans in Malaysia through his Facebook group, The Beatles & Beyond.
Foo even has his own band where he is “Lennon”, with friends representing Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Starr.
Foo dreams of visiting England someday.
“I think that is every fan’s greatest dream — to ‘walk the walk’,” said Foo, referring to the iconic Abbey Road pedestrian crossing on the cover of the Beatles album, Abbey Road.
