Sand and earth in place of green grass

INSTEAD of an expanse of green, the school field of SK Ampang (2) is covered with sand and earth.

Pupils of the school have not been able to use their field for almost a year as it is covered with sand and earth.

It is learnt that the school had appointed a private contractor to raise the level of the field in February last year and work began in April.

The project was expected to be completed by the end of last year. However, now almost three months into 2014, the field is still unusable.

Several parents have expressed unhappiness over the delay and hope the field upgrading work is completed soon.

“In 2012, the field was green and many activities were held there. Now, it looks like a desert,” a parent who declined to be identified, said.

He added the school claimed that the upgrading work was necessary because the field would become waterlogged after a downpour.

A check by StarMetro revealed that there was a notice of upgrading work, and the date of completion was listed as Jan 1 this year.

Safety is also an issue as the wire fence near the field was dismantled and left in a heap nearby. This makes the school grounds easily accessible to outsiders.

Without the fence, pupils can also easily fall into the nearby Sungai Klang.

“Now, because there is no field, children participate in futsal and other sports at the open court, which also acts as the assembly area for pupils,” said a parent. The school has two outdoor badminton courts.

A Parent-Teacher Associa-tion member claimed that they were not consulted about the upgrading work.

The Gombak Education Office said an approval letter was issued for the project.

A source from the Education Ministry’s development unit said the appointed contractor was late in completing the project and had not handed over the field to the school.

“The ministry will obtain a recovery plan from the contractor before deciding on its next move,” he said.
