MALACCA: An officer from Malacca Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) sustained serious injuries while thwarting a smuggling attempt in a high-seas drama off Kuala Sungai Lukut coast in Negri Sembilan waters.
The 30-year-old officer suffered fractured shoulder and injuries to his eyelids and cheeks but was reported to be in a stable conditionwhile currently receiving treatment at hospital here.
MMEA Maritime Five enforcement chief Captain Abu Bakar Idris said the injured officer was with four other colleagues involved in a special operation on last Saturday when they intercepted the fibreglass boat upon suspecting something amiss.
He said the boat that was unlit and had no registration number on its hull was spotted about five nautical miles off the coast of Kuala Lukut at 5,30am on Saturday.
“My team flagged-down the boat but the helmsman thrust his boat’s throttle eventually triggering a high-speed chase,” he said.
Abu Bakar said during the height of the pursue, both the boats collided, causing the officer to hit the boat’s window panel due to the impact.
“My officers made the second attempt to block the smuggler’s vessel but they managed to sped-off and later beached their boat along the shore before escaping into a mangrove site,” he said.
Abu Bakar said his officers managed to confiscate 2,500 cartons of various brands of contraband clove cigarettes from the boat.
He added the boat was towed to Kuala Linggi MMEA jetty while the seizure is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
