Joining forces to fight dengue

FIGHTING dengue has become a mission for residents of Lestari Perdana 8 in Seri Kembangan and they are intent on doing it together.

Armed with rakes and plastic bags, a group of 50 residents cleaned up their neighbourhood last Sunday.

The gotong-royong was sparked by a string of dengue cases in nearby areas.

According to LP 8 Residents Association chairman Mohd Afizudin Said, several cases were reported in Bandar Putra Permai.

“A child died from dengue fever about two months ago. We are all scared for our health and decided to organise this gotong-royong,” he said.

Afizudin said taking care of the cleanliness of surrounding areas is everyone’s responsibility.

“We cannot be dependent on the council alone. This is our backyard and we have to take care of it,” he added.

Messages and e-mails were sent out to residents, and Afizudin was happy with the turnout despite the short notice of four days.

Most of the residents, including Afizudin, brought their children.

He wanted to instill a love for cleanliness in them.

“Helping the grown-ups clean their neighbourhood would make them realise the importance of having a clean, healthy environment,” said Afizudin.

Resident Fadli Hamzah, 44, said the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) should conduct regular checks on their contractors to ensure the area is clean.

The gotong-royong activity also brought the residents closer and gave them an opportunity to mingle.

Aziz Ibrahim, 50, said the activity had allowed residents to get to know each other better.

Having lived there for 10 years, Aziz felt that residents should take part in such events more often.
