PASSION and artistry go into every dish whipped up by chef Spider Kong at Violet House Cafe at Sri Sayang Apartment in Batu Ferringhi, Penang.
One will be indeed surprised by the simple but delicious Western and fusion cuisine served here.
The 29-year-old Kong took over the cafe last June and totally reinvented the menu from typical cafe dishes to presentation food infused with his innovative flair.
Having put his heart into his cooking, he derives great fulfilment from the feedback he receives from patrons.
The menu will undergo another revamp effective March. Favourites are maintained while new creations are bound to tantalise.
For breakfast, diners have a choice of Western interpretations such as Puffy Cheese Omelette and Grilled Chicken Bratwurst or local delights comprising nasi lemak, chicken congee and mee goreng.
Starters such as Quinoa Salad, Thai Seafood Salad (prawns, mussels and squid tossed with vermicelli, cilantro, honey tomato and chilli lime dressing) and Sesame Tuna Tataki (served with marinated daikon top, wasabi mayo, mesclun salad and toasted sesame dressing) will definitely whet appetites.
The Quinoa Salad is tossed with watercress, marinated cooked capsicum, citrus fruits and shallot lime dressing for that totally refreshing and invigorating taste.
Mains such as Sous Vide Chicken Breast, Duck Confit, Braised Short Ribs, Braised Lamb Shank, Herb Crusted Salmon, Macadamia Crusted Seabass Fish and Cajun Spiced Prawn are exquisitely prepared and beautifully presented.
Served with pomme puree, sautéed assorted vegetables and garnished with onion marmalade and red wine au jus, the short ribs is scrumptious.
The meat is braised for five hours until perfectly tender while the overall preparations take two days.
Other dishes consist of Caponata Pasta (sautéed greens with onion, garlic, shimeji mushroom, black olive, home cooked
tomato sauce and fresh grated Parmesan cheese) and Grilled Lemongrass Chicken Thigh (aglio olio pasta with honey tomato).
There are also Asian delights such as Homemade Curry Chicken, Grandma’s
Curry Fish, Seafood Bee Hoon, Egg & Cheese Jaffle, Grilled Chicken Walnut Mayo Sandwich and Seafood Tortilla Wrap, to name a few.
Alternatively, the set lunch available from noon to 2.30pm on weekdays is priced at RM18.8+ per person and comes with a salad, soup, main and drink.
This pork-free cafe with free WiFi provides a choice of al fresco dining beside the swimming pool or air-conditioned comfort.
Operating hours are from 8am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm on weekdays, and from 8am to 10pm on weekends and public holidays.
