KUCHING: Datuk Seri Effendi Norwawi is scheduled to meet incoming Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem at any time.

The latter said he had arranged for the meeting to discuss “a few things” with the politician-turned-businessman.

“He can come any time. I called him around two days ago,” Adenan said after attending the wedding reception of the granddaughter of former Dewan Negara speaker Tan Sri Abang Ahmad Urai Abang Mohideen, Dayang Nina Masfira Abang Affendi and Azlan Shah Patrick Ling near Satok here yesterday.

However he was tight-lipped about the details of the scheduled discussion, which further heated up talks about the possibility of Effendi being named among the candidates for Balingian, where outgoing Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is presently the assemblyman.

A by-election for the state seat is deemed imminent following Taib’s resignation effective Feb 28, which might see him taking over Tun Muhammad Salahuddin as Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negri.

Should this happen, Taib had to relinquish his assemblyman’s post as well as his presidency in PBB in order to become the new Head of State.

It is also speculated that Taib’s eldest son Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir would also be in the line for the Balingian seat.

Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (EC) recently said the by-election for Balingian could be held simultaneously with that of Kajang next month.

The Kajang state seat in Selangor became vacant following the resignation of PKR’s representative Lee Chin Cheh on Jan 27. Nomination day is fixed for March 11 while voting takes place on March 23.

“The EC has no problem in conducting multiple by-elections and had done so in the past.

“But for now, as far as I know, there is no mention of when he (Taib) is relinquishing his post as Balingian assemblyman, so I guess we will have to wait for the announcement,” Aziz said, adding that the Kuching EC’s office had been directed to make “administrative preparation”, including updating the electoral roll and list down requirements for the by-election.

So far, PBB MPs and assemblymen have been telling the media that they would fully support Adenan and his decisions after his swearing-in as Sarawak’s fifth chief minister on Feb 28.
