WITH the Israeli military control over Gaza and the West Bank in its 47th year, 15 young writers from Gaza are publishing a collection of short stories in English this month. The collection titled, Gaza Writes Back, was edited by Refaat Alareer, who teaches English and world literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, and published by Just World Books of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Gaza Writes Back has been praised by numerous writers including Susan Abulhawa, Victoria Brittain and Jean Said Makdisi. The book debuts as discussions rage in academic circles in the United States about calls from Palestinian grassroots organisations for American universities to sever institutional ties with universities in Israel. Those calling for the boycott cite the tight restrictions Israel has placed for decades on the academic freedom of the 4.2 million residents of the West Bank and Gaza.
