KUALA Lumpur City Hall’s
(DBKL) readiness for Visit Malaysia Year 2014 has been questioned.
Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun cited an unmanned kiosk in Petaling Street, as an example.
The kiosk was launched in 2007 and is located close to the main arch in Petaling Street.
It has become a white elephant and a place to post illegal advertisements.
“2014 is Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) and the Tourism and Culture Ministry is promoting Malaysia to the world, but are all agencies ready to welcome tourists and provide the best service possible?
“We want them to have a pleasant trip. However, DBKL does not seem very prepared to receive tourists.
“DBKL should beef up its marketing strategy at hotspots like Petaling Street,” he said at a press conference in Petaling Street after visiting the kiosk.
He also said police presence should be increased to ensure the safety of tourists.
It was reported that Malaysia is expecting 28 million tourist arrivals while for Kuala Lumpur, the mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib has set a target of 15 million visitors.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, who was also present, said DBKL should act before tourists get a bad impression of Malaysia.
On a separate issue, Lim questioned the effectiveness of the Integrated Public Agency Complaints Monitoring System (i-SPAAA) adopted by DBKL in 2010.
The i-SPAAA, is a high-tech system which allows DBKL to monitor all the complaints received and address them effectively to ensure that the call centre will respond within three days.
“The Federal Territories Ministry, in its reply to my question in Parliament, said that since Jan 1, 2010 until last year, DBKL received 74,189 complaints via i-SPAAA and 73,913 had been resolved.
“This near-perfect figure is very doubtful considering the monitoring is done by DBKL and the FT Ministry only.
“I suggest an NGO or any independent body be appointed to validate the claim,” he said.
