AS fireworks lit up the night sky over Petronas Twin Towers, 3km away, the iconic Dataran Merdeka was shrouded in darkness as protests by four non-governmental organisations (NGO) marred New Year celebrations here.
Some 5,000-strong protesters of Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun), student movement Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), PKR-backed group Jingga 13 and youth group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) joined the crowd gathered at Dataran Merdeka at 11pm.
