Participants get an insight into the goodness of the humble potato

THE humble potato has been given quite a bad reputation with myths of it being fattening and having high carbohydrate content.

However, the perception may soon change with the recent cooking workshop organised by travel and lifestyle magazine ‘where2’ at Sigi’s Bar & Grill on the Beach in Batu Ferringhi’s Golden Sands Resort, Penang.

Participants at the live cooking workshop were amazed by the actual nutritional content in potatoes.

United States Potato Board representative Eddie Saw said potatoes from US were a good source of potassium.

“It’s also rich in Vitamin C, high in complex carbohydrate and without any sodium, fat or cholesterol.

“Furthermore, potatoes are filling due to their high fiber content. Compared with an avocado and a banana, a 100gm potato actually has less calories,” he told the participants.

Saw added that there was also a wide variety of US potatoes, namely the all-purpose Russet, round white potatoes, yellow potatoes, long white potatoes, the small fingerlings, red potatoes and the unique blue and purple potatoes.

Demonstrating how US potatoes could be used with local cooking, a Golden Sands Resort chef demonstrated the steps to cooking Lamb Vindaloo.

The fragrant aroma of the spices wafted through the cooking area as the chef expertly cooked the dish.

Next, the chef once again fired up the stove to show how Aloo Matter, a curry dish with potatoes and green peas, was cooked.

The last dish was the Aloo Chat, a salad dish with potato and chat masala spice.

The participants also got to try the three delicious dishes during lunch. After the workshop, there was also a lucky draw session.

where2 magazine editor K.Y. Pung also presented a souvenir to Wilma Budke, 85, from Germany, who is the longest-staying foreign tourist to Penang, having spent over 5,000 room nights here.

Also present at the workshop was Penang Chinese State Association president Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew.
