Learning the difference between ‘existence’
and ‘being’ can be enlightening
A mother was hurt and shocked to hear her son telling lies. So, she took the boy aside and told him about the perils of telling lies.
She said to him, “When you tell a lie, a black man with red eyes and horns on his head will drag you from your bed in the middle of the night and punish you badly. Hereafter, I am sure you won’t tell lies.”
“No mother, hereafter I will not tell lies”, assured the son. However, he added, “More than me, you are a bigger liar.”
Error on the part of one who lies cannot be corrected by another who commits the same error. One has to understand this and be alert.
Why do people tell lies? What do people achieve by telling lies? The effort needed to protect ourselves from being caught as a liar causes more tension and that lying places the unnecessary burden of remembering one’s lies that is a strain on one’s brain. One fills the mind with unnecessary thoughts, unnecessary worries, unnecessary hurts, and unnecessary lies. This restricts the space available for any creative acts.
People tend to increase their knowledge. In the east, there is a distinction between “knowledge” and “being” and the emphasis is to increase one’s being. Both knowledge and being are required. But with the transformation of knowledge into being, knowledge will not be limited to information. So both knowledge and being should be firmly in place for transformation to take place.
Anyone can understand that there are different levels of knowledge, but remarkably only few can understand that there are different levels of “being”.
Being is your presence — your presence as a good, pure, inspiring and transparent essence.
One should not confuse “existence” with “being”. A stone exists, a plant exists, a man exists, but they exist quite differently. It is here the idea of being comes in.
For example, the being of a plant, the being of a stone, the being of an animal, the being of a man, the divine being are all at different levels.
The being is always from origin, but existence is from birth. Let us take the being of an animal. All animal has existence from birth. A cat exits, a dog exists, and a horse exists. They have a common existence. But the being of a cat, a dog, and a horse are quite different. The being is not from birth, but from conception.
Just think deeply on this. This being is an evolving essence, an evolving presence. So too is your being and mine.
If a person gets hurt because someone makes an unpleasant statement, it only shows the level of one’s being. But if one can forgive the person who has caused the hurt, it shows the level of one’s being at a different or higher level.
If one is selfish, it shows one’s being at some level. But if one were to serve others with love and goodness, it shows another level of being. It is not a matter of judgment but a matter of clarity leading to the opportunity for growth.
To grow up is one thing and to grow old is yet another thing. Growing up involves adding years to your life. Growing old involves adding wisdom to your life.
So are you working on your being? How to work on being is a vast topic.
But do not stop the question and try to find an answer. Resolve right now to make a beginningto transform and support the process of transformation in your daily life.
