Doing odd jobs part of being the man of the house

WHEN I was 11, Papa taught me “manly” skills such as using common household tools to repair the plumbing. Once, I even went into the attic to change a broken float in the water tank.

Mama, on the other hand, made sure I learned simple sewing techniques such as stitching buttons on my school shirts. She also taught me how to make French toast (we called it Bombay toast) for breakfast and bake butter cake for tea.
