Good job: Climb completed by APU students and other participants. Lucky-draw prizes given out by Chua.
ACCORDING to statistics, there are an estimated 27,000 kidney patients on dialysis, with over 5,000 new kidney patients diagnosed with the disease.
To raise funds for the growing number of kidney patients at its Klang Valley centres, MAA Medicare organised a “Celebrate Life 2” charity climb.
The “Celebrate Life 2” charity climb took place at Bukit Broga, Semenyih with more than 200 enthusiastic supporters as well as kidney patients, their family members and many Asia-Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) students.
All participants had the names of kidney patients pinned on their T-shirts as a sign of support during the climb.
MAA Medicare senior vice-president ‘Aliyah Karen said it was a unique way for supporters to connect to the cause.
“Kidney patients have to adjust their routines and have to seek treatment four hours each session, three times a week.
“Some students may not be able to financially support these patients.
“However, we want them to know there are many ways to show support.
“By taking care of themselves and staying healthy, they can play an equally important role in the future.
“At least they are now aware of kidney failure, what patients go through and how to take care of their diet and health.
“We also want to give kidney patients a chance to experience a fresh environment and to breathe the fresh air and rejuvenate themselves.”
One donor was Polylab Biotech Sdn Bhd managing director Freddy Chua, who gave RM10,000.
“It’s a small contribution. I am impressed that MAA Medicare has organised this event for their patients.”
Other sponsors included Mondelez International, Pemanis and Nestle. A total of RM20,000 was raised from the event.
MAA Medicare is a not-for-profit public trust fund established in 1994 under the umbrella of MAA Group Bhd.
It cares for 800 patients in 12 centres nationwide, including three in the Klang Valley — MAA Medicare Charity Dialysis in Jalan Ipoh, Sungai Besi and Kajang.
