THE Goldhill Club in Kepong will organise their 16th junior football training camp in Port Dickson from Nov 16 to Dec 31.
The club’s sports manager Andrew Velayutham said 65 boys aged between 12 and 17 have signed up for their annual “summer holiday camp” getaway.
“We have grown in strength over the years. We at the club will ensure that the participants enjoy their training stint,” said Velayutham.
He said during the 46-day camp, the boys would be put to the test in character-building and instilling self-esteem — by staying on their own and away from the luxury of their homes.
“It is one big united family in Port Dickson. There is a time-table where everyone takes turns to do the chores to make the camp a success. Every year is a new experience and the boys look forward to it,” said Velayutham, who has also been the camp commandant for the last 15 years.
He said the club had been supportive of the summer holiday camp without fail for the last 15 years.
“The management is happy with our programmes and activities. There is a time to play, a time to study and a time to work. At the end of this camp, they will gain experience and be more independent.”
He said it was no easy task to prepare for the trip, which they have to rent the bungalow, team bus and playing field.
“We have purchased two units of air-conditioners, which we will install at the bungalow. We have also purchased a refrigerator, stand fans, rice cookers and stoves,” said Velayutham.
Goldhill general manager Lim Thye Kuih said the club’s aim was to provide a platform for the boys to work their way to the top.
“The onus is on the boys. We have equipped them with playing opportunities in the Kuala Lumpur Football League.
“Occasionally, we also provide them exposure by playing friendly matches in Ipoh and Singapore. Lately a few of the boys have been on trials with clubs in the S-League. It is good to see them progress,” said Thye Kuih.
During the PD camp, Velayutham will be assisted by Rivellino Raj Valerio in the football training sessions.
Velayutham, who has been a father figure to more than a 1,000 children under his care and tutelage at the Goldhill Club in Kepong for the last 26 years, said there were many aspiring talents coming for the camp.
He said teenager Cheam Jung Ho was the latest recruit to join the Goldhill Club in Kepong.
“Jung Ho has been with me for a few months now and I see this boy has a great future. He is only 15 and shows maturity in his game. He shows good vision as a midfielder and I will be fielding him in the KLFA League with the second division side (Gold Valley FC) in the new season,” said Velayutham.
An excited Jung Ho said he was looking forward to turning pro one day.
“I have a long way to go and will attend the Goldhill Club’s summer camp in Port Dickson,” said the younsgter, who hopes to play in the S-League one day.
Then, there is Soe Zhao Hoe a creative midfielder who wants a shot in the professional league.
Velayutham said the 18-year-old was the club’s playmaker an a great asset to the team.
“This boy can go far in his playing career and I hope that he gets a chance to prove himself,” said Velayutham.
Another promising talent set to go places is goalkeeper Au Yong Tien, who will represent Malaysia in the Gothia Cup in Sweden next year.
