It was a sea of red at the Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur last Friday as the Manchester United Suppor-ters Club Malaysian Branch, better known as the Malaysian Red Devils, celebrated its 20th anniversary and also basked in the glory of the club winning its 20th English Premier League title last season.
The dinner was also a tribute to former manager Sir Alex Ferguson who stepped down after 26 years in charge.
The supporters’ club patron Raja Muda Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail and his consort Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil were the guests of honour at the function.
Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker was also in attendance together with Astro Supersport pundit Abbas Saad.
There were many events lined up for the night such as quizzes and lucky draws. There was also a fussball challenge where fans in tag teams pitted their skills in table soccer with loads of fun and laughter. Door gifts such as wristbands were given to children and women and club stickers were also distributed to all those who attended the event.
Lucky draw prizes included autographed jerseys by the current squad players and an auction of jerseys signed by former players who have visited the supporters’ clubhouse was also part of the night’s programme.
Club president Laurence How was all smiles as he also celebrated his birthday and was overjoyed with the response.
“I would like to thank all the fans who came from as far as Sabah to make this night a memorable one. I would also like to thank our club patron, his consort, Parker, Abbas and all the sponsors for making this night a success,” said a beaming Laurence.
Abbas and Parker were equally delighted to be invited to the event. Abbas, a loyal Southampton supporter, was very obliging with requests to take photos and sign autographs.
“As a pundit, I try to be as neutral as possible and honest with my opinions.
“I am truly honoured to be here to celebrate with the fans of one of the biggest clubs in the world,” said the Australian.
Parker was impressed with what he saw during the function.
“This is the biggest Man Utd function I have been to outside the UK. I think the fans here are full of buzz and very respectful,” said Parker.
When asked on United’s poor start to the season, Parker said it was indeed disappointing but is convinced that the club will finish in the top four in the English Premier League.
“Last season we were not convincing but we still finished tops. This season the coaching staff should have been retained but nevertheless David Moyes is the right choice and needs to be given more time and backing. It is going to be tough but I am convinced that we will finish in the top four,” said Parker.
