LAST Saturday’s cook-off between two teams of radio announcers saw Suria FM triumph over sister station Red FM.
The Palm Oil Rocks Cook-Off, organised by the Star Radio Group, aimed to promote the benefits of palm oil in cooking.
With Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang Jaya, Selangor, set as their battleground, Suria FM and Red FM each pitted four of their radio announcers against one another in a friendly showdown.
Representing Team Suria were Halim Othman, Linda Onn, DJ Lin and newsreader DJ Haffiz. Facing them on Team Red was the all-male gang of Lil Kev, Jeremy, Terry and Fiqrie.
Both teams were given 90 minutes to create a set of three dishes — appetiser, main course and dessert — and points were given for taste and presentation.
The panel of judges was made up of Masterchef Celebrity Malaysia champion Datuk Fazley Yaakob, TV celebrity chef Sherson Lian, GTower executive chef Johnny Fua and Star Publications (M) Bhd acting group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
Team Suria were favourites from the start, with Linda Onn and DJ Haffiz both operating their own restaurants while their opponents confessed that Lil Kev, being the only father on the team, was the only one with “some sort of cooking experience”.
Although they started off looking slightly lost, Team Red later surprised the judges by completing their three dishes with one minute to spare while Team Suria barely made it in time.
Team Suria went with more Middle Eastern-themed dishes — Tabbouleh, Nasi Ayam Kabsa and Pudding Caramel Cinta while Team Red made simpler dishes — Pumpkin Soup, Salmon with Butter Rice and Sago Gula Melaka.
“Team Suria may have won, but both teams were very closely matched,” said Lian on behalf of the judges.
The Palm Oil Rocks Cook-Off is a Star Radio Group intiative to educate Malaysians on the importance of palm oil to the nation’s economy, as well as highlight the wide and various uses of palm oil.
It is also to create awareness of palm oil’s benefits — the oil is cholesterol-free, rich in Vitamin E tocotrienols, while its stability in high heat makes it the oil of choice for frying.
Carotino and Buruh cooking oil, Daisy margarine and Maggi foodstuff hampers were given out as goodie bags and prizes during a Q&A session with the audience, and 100 oil palm seedlings sponsored by Felda Global Ventures were distributed to the public.
