SIBU: Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee (pic) is concerned over the fact that some 49% of bumiputra youths here have education below SPM level.
He said this group certainly needed attention in terms of making them employable.
That aside, Dr Annuar said he was delighted that another 28% or one out of four bumiputra youths — meaning those below 45 years old — had university education.
He said for this group, job opportunities should be in their favour.
The statistics above was part of the early results gleaned from a data collection on the town’s youths launched three days ago.
Dr Annuar, who was speaking at a press conference yesterday, said the objective of having the data was to know the profiles of the bumiputra youths so that plans could be put forward to help them.
“For those who have stopped at Form 5 or below, with the data we now have, we can help by giving them technical training.”
According to Dr Annuar, their initial findings showed that 17% are jobless, 6% have technical education, 6% are involved in business, 19% are doing their own work, 23% are working in the private sector, 28% in public sector and 6% are still studying.
He said the income level of 74% of the respondents was below RM2,500 per month, adding that most were worried about their future because they did not own land on which to build their future homes.
He said they were also worried by the rising cost of living. One disturbing fact from the data was that 94% of the youths did not own land.
“The Federal Government has planned to build one million affordable houses nationwide. Of these, 75,000 will be built in Sarawak.
“As shown in the data, we can now fight to have a bigger share of such houses for the bumiputra youths in this town,” he said.
He said as the data collection was only two days old, better details would only be known in a few months.
“We are going round getting bumiputra youths to join in the data collection exercise. They can help at www.facebook.com/dun nangka. It only takes 10 minutes to fill the form online.”
