Stretch: Participants of the Walk-a-Mile celebration doing warm-up exercises
CHANGE your lifestyle and lead a healthy life. That’s the message from Heart Foundation of Malaysia (HFM) chairman Datuk Dr J.S. Sambhi.
“Malaysians should really change their lifestyle,” said Dr Sambhi in conjunction with the World Heart Day (WHD) Walk-a-Mile celebration held at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur recently.
“Cardiovascular diseases or heart diseases have been the number one killer in the world since 30 years ago. Even in Malaysia, it is still the number one killer. And because of the seriousness of the diseases, preventive measures must be observed.
“Almost 50% of deaths related to heart diseases can be prevented with a few simple lifestyle changes.
“You only have to have self-discipline and follow basic rules such as reducing excessive eating, cutting down on oil, sugar and salt intake, exercising more and to stop smoking,” said Dr Sambhi.
The event, themed “Take the Road to a Healthy Heart” was launched by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Some 1,500 participants took part in the 1.5km walk around the lake, jointly organised by the foundation and Nestle Omega Plus.
This is the 12th installation of the Walk-a-Mile celebration, which was also supported by the Health Ministry and the World Heart Foundation.
“We at Nestle believe that a healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy heart. This is why, Nestle through Nestle Omega Plus has consistently organised the Walk-a-Mile event for the past 12 years as a continued effort in promoting and reminding Malaysians about the importance of a healthy heart,” Nestle Malaysia/Singapore regional head Alois Hofbauer said.
Hofbauer also presented a cheque from Nestle for RM30,000 to HFM president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid which will be utilised to increase awareness and educate the public on heart and circulatory diseases.
Also present were Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, HFM vice-president Tan Sri Kamaruzzaman Shariff and HFM vice-chairman Datuk Gurbakash Singh.
Participants were treated to free health checks, a warm-up session, a host of games and activities,
plus a sampling Nestle Omega Plus milk.
