A FORMIDABLE Iran side dashed Malaysia’s hope of advancing to the semi-finals of the Thailand Open International five-a-side football tournament for the blind (B1) in Bangkok recently.
After going into the crucial decider against Iran with a win and a draw, national coach Sunny Shalesh said his charges did well and kept their opponents at bay without scoring in the first opening 25 minutes.
“We stunned the Iranians because we were not intimidated by their reputation in the early stages of the encounter. We showed outstanding defensive qualities to frustrate them,” said Sunny.
“It was all over for us when we allowed them to slot in two quick goals at the start of the second-half. They were at full strength and came out in search for the goals. We were caught off guard when they adopted an unusual approach with long shots,” he added.
In the two earlier group matches, Malaysia got off to a good start with a 1-0 win over Vietnam, followed by a 0-0 draw with Russia.
The recent tournament, hosted by the Sports Association of the Blind Thailand (SABT), drew a total of seven teams.
The three other teams were hosts Thailand, Hong Kong and India.
Iran triumphed over Russia with a convincing 4-0 victory in the final.
The recent tournament was Malaysia’s third international outing. Malaysia finished fifth in their international debut at the third IBSA Asian Championship in Tokyo in 2009. And last year, they also featured in an invitation development tournament in Bangkok.
Healthcare provider Columbia Asia and low-cost airline AirAsia were the partners of the national side for the event.
Sunny added the players showed great commitment to adapting to specific techniques and tactics during their evening training sessions over the fasting month.
