A good deed: Velu (left) and Jessie handing over a jersey to one of the lads while his teammates cheer in the background.
YOUNG footballer B. Marvin Raj could not contain his excitement after getting his first team jersey after nine years of training in Jinjang Utara, Kuala Lumpur.
“I used to buy some of the cheap jerseys outside and it tears easily.
“Now, I feel more like in a team. I hope that I can wear this jersey to play in more tournaments,” he said, during the presentation of jerseys to his team.
From the age of five, Marvin practised with his father, Velu Palaiyan, who then founded Smart Football Academy (FA) in 2011.
He has also taken part in three tournaments since last year.
Some 30 players were delighted after receiving their jersey and they wore it for a friendly match among teammates.
About 30 sets of jerseys including good quality socks were bought with the funds raised in a donation drive initiated by a group of good Samaritans and the players’ relatives.
One of the volunteers who coordinated the donation, Jessie Rajendran, said around RM1,700 was collected during the drive.
“One of the players’ relatives had approached me with the idea of having a donation for the players and I agreed.
“We have friends who have donated as little as RM5 but this made a difference to the youngsters,” he said.
Another donor, Bahan Hurushinaiko, 60, said he had donated RM300 for the academy.
“It is not about the donations that count but the contributions from the residents. Some had sponsored food and tents during the friendly match.
“We are also hoping for bigger sponsors to fund for the academy so that the players can take part in more tournaments.
Velu, 48, who is the academy coach, was thankful for the kind gesture by the public.
“The team consists of 10- to 15- year-old children who train every weekend with me.
“We are also utilising the funds to fund for the National Teenager Football Development Program Malacca 8-team tournament,” he said.
