FROM this November, the Beach Street area of George Town will be occupied with games, music, culture, sports and food on Sundays under the new Occupy Beach Street Project.
The four-month project by the Penang Government is in conjunc-tion with the ongoing Car-Free Day
in the area, where Beach Street, Church Street Ghaut, Church Street and part of Bishop Street are closed
to traffic from 7am to 1pm every Sunday.
Today Lifestyle Marketing marketing director Aleex Quah said the project was organised by the com-pany along with the Penang Muni-cipal Council, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) and George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI).
He said the core objective of the project was to encourage sustained physical activity and increase community engagement as well as support for the provision of broader transportation choices.
“In this project, the current Car-Free Day routes will be divided into four unique zones — Eco Friendly Zone, Sport Zone, Play Zone and Cultural Zone that will be supported by different kinds of activities,” said Quah.
Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik said the income generated from this project would be invested back into the programme to continue the project in coming years.
“We welcome traders to use this project as a platform to promote their products or businesses,” Ng told a press conference yesterday.
